Teams can’t function when their people aren’t taken care of. It’s the responsibility of company leaders to focus on individuals, and that means everyone on the team. It’s important to remember the human in Human Resources and people in People Operations.

If nothing else in the past year, we’ve seen the necessity of embracing our humanity at work. 2020 showed us that there is nothing more important than people. Employers need to reprioritize the human element in how they support and encourage their people. Inspire them to bring their best self to work.

When people bring their best selves to work, they’re more engaged. And more engaged employees mean more successful teams. Companies need to focus even more on the people they impact. We’ve all learned to expect the unexpected, and this next year is sure to bring its own hurdles that require an empathetic, human-focused mindset.

We all face very human obstacles and opportunities. Those will continue as we cope with setbacks, but also as we bounce back and innovate and improve.

As you are leading your teams, consider the following questions:

Are you leading with empathy, kindness, vulnerability, compassion and respect?

Are you giving AND receiving regular feedback?

The most successful leaders know that you need to be a fierce people advocate and willing to put your people before the business.
